The Ecology-Size Paradox:
Why Cars Aren’t More Sustainable as They Grow

September, 19 2023 - Thoughts about Design

In recent years, we’ve seen a noticeable uptick in the size and power of cars on the road. But what’s behind this growing trend? Is it consumer demand, or are there other forces at play?

A manipulation factor

Marketing campaigns often paint larger cars as safer, more luxurious, and a status symbol, influencing consumer choices.

A safety excuse

The safety argument is often cited to justify larger vehicles. But if safety is paramount, why do we still have bicycles and motorcycles sharing the road with these behemoths?

The growth/electric paradox

As electric cars become more mainstream, you’d expect a focus on efficiency and sustainability. However, many electric vehicles (EVs) are as large and powerful as their fossil-fueled counterparts, if not more so.

Empowering inequality

Larger, more powerful cars can be seen as markers of social status and economic power, further widening societal gaps. Their size and power make a statement, often one of superiority or exclusivity.

The trend toward larger vehicles contradicts the move toward a more sustainable and socially equitable future. In upcoming posts, we’ll explore how to reverse this trend.
